Activated carbon is used as such in granular form in the coloumns of water purification plants for filtering huge volumes of water contaminated with many organic and inorganic contaminants. To suit the requirements of water purification for house hold purposes, modern approach is to use the economical process of adsorption of the water contaminants over carbon only but in form of blocks along with reverse osmosis, UV irradiation, mineral addition, etc. It is easy to take the suitable mesh size of active carbon and binder and produce the 0.5, 1, 5 and 10-micron carbon block based on compression molding or extrusion for specific purposes.

In both the technology, the carbon and binder are mixed and in compression molding it is compressed to get the unit piece, however, in extrusion it is continuous process where the carbon and binder are mixed with a screw auger in a barrel, heated to a optimized temperature and cooled to get the block length continuously, which is cut into the required length. The performance of block depends on the carbon used, carbon particle size, binder particle size, the porosity, kinectics, contamination levels, etc. Carbon blocks are engineered and manufactured for different applications such as dechlorination, bad taste and odour removal, chloramines and organic materials removal, VOC removal, heavy metal removal, etc. The blocks are rated based on their sediment filtration efficiency.

The extrusion technology has been used by ACIPL to bulk produce and meet the requirements of the different types of Carbon blocks as enlisted herewith for a large number of customers, and we are proud to supply these blocks for different applications to the customers satisfaction by maintaining the quality consistently. The blocks are generally manufactured in size from 1-4.25-inch dia and 2.5 to 40-inch length. In brief it van be interpreted that carbon blocks provide effective and versatile filtration for a wide range of different applications. We manufacture custom extruded blocks for different applications such as sediment and chemical removal.

HM REMOVAL BLOCK (Heavy Metal Removal)

Heavy metal (HM) is any metallic chemical element that is poisonous at low concentrations when consumed over permissible quantities cause psychological disorder. They are highly toxic for both animals and human beings, and can be bio-accumulated through biological chains and are non-biodegradable and persistent. Their toxicity may occur due to industrial emission that contaminates waterways, nearby streams and rivers, contamination of irrigation water, the application of fertilizer and metal-based pesticides, harvesting process, transportation, storage, or sale. This contamination is a widespread environmental problem. The harmful effects caused by heavy metals in water to living organism if excess amount is ingested through food. Elements, such as Cadmium and Chromium, are considered carcinogenic, while Iron, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, and Nickel are considered essential trace elements). Painting paper, pigment, fuels, photographic materials electroplating, battery manufactures, explosive manufacturing, and metal working industries discharge a large amount of heavy metals, including Copper, Zinc, Lead, and Nickel ions in water bodies which cause serious environmental contamination.
Arsenic is also another heavy metal which is available in almost 70% bore well water. Therefore, it is essential to purify the water to make it potable. The conventional methods for heavy metal removal from waste water which includes chemical precipitation, reverse osmosis, and solvent extraction are expensive especially for developing countries. Adsorption on adsorbent such as active carbon or modified active carbon is an alternative method, because it is cost effective and simple to design.

Activated carbon is a term for a family of highly carbonaceous materials none of which can be characterized by a structural formula. It is an amorphous solid consisting of micro crystallites with a graphite lattice, and they are non polar, highly porous, usually prepared in small pellets or a powder. The limitation is that it reacts with oxygen at moderate temperatures (over 300 °C). It is obtained from carbonaceous material; carbonization and activation are the two phases of manufacturing activated carbon. Waste water is any water that has been adversely affected in quality by anthropogenic influence and can originate from a combination of domestic, industrial, commercial, or agricultural activities, surface runoff, or storm water, and from sewer inflow or infiltration. We manufacture not only active carbon suitable for liquid processing to treat the waste water to sewage water but also we modified the carbon and made it a high oxidant to remove heavy metals such as Pb, Hg, As, Cr and Cd by impregnating with active MnO2. Based on MnO2 impregnated carbon we developed and manufactured HMR Carbon block. Presently, removal efficiency of HMR blocks is 70-80%.

IRON REMOVAL BLOCK

Iron is one of the major problem in ground water of many areas in India. As per IS:10500 Drinking water specifications, iron concentration should not be more than 0.3 mg/Lit in potable water . Excessive levels of iron above 0.3 mg/l in water, may lead to many problems in usage and also adverse health effects if people drink such water. Iron will be in the form of Fe2+, Fe3+ and as few more other compounds in dissolved state in water. Iron imparts color in water if it is excessive, which leads to aesthetic effects in water. If it is used for laundry application, affects the color of the white fabric.

VOC REMOVAL BLOCK

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) causes irritation in the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, loss of coordination, and nausea. Prolonged exposure can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.

Carbon filters remove effectively VOCs from water. Since VOCs are organic compounds, they are carbon-based. RO does not provide the adequate removal of VOCs. The adsorption properties of the activated carbon filter suit to remove the carbon-based VOC. No better defense mechanism against VOCs is offered than carbon as active carbon based on coconut shell is microporous and micropores can only house them suitably to grab them in active carbons.

We have further modified the active carbon with nano alumina for the enhanced adsorption capacity of active carbon block to remove the VOCs. We have developed VOC Blocks based on Active Carbon of coconut shell origin with and without alumina. VOCs Blocks can be manufactured in different size for different applications.

CUSTOMIZATION

In general, the adsorption capacity of activated carbon is proportional to the internal surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution and especially the surface chemistry. There are numerous reports of more organic adsorption in pores that are barely large enough to admit the adsorbate molecule; for example, it has been pointed out that dyes and humic acids have dimensions (1.5–3.0 nm) that favour their adsorption in mesopores. Hence, the difference in pore size distribution affects the adsorption capacity for molecules of different sizes and shapes. The removal efficiency can be further enhanced by the electric force between the carbon surface and the adsorbate. In some cases, adsorption depends upon dissociation of particular functional groups—which in turn depend on the activation condition, activating chemical and the conditions of application. Activated carbon therefore is required to be customized as per the specification of the user depending on the application. We carry out physical and chemical modification with and without impregnants of activated carbons to customize them and the best examples are our military grade carbon, CO adsorbent based on active carbon, heavy metal removal carbon, iron removal carbon, etc.
